Debra Betts, PhD, LAc

Topic: Securing the embryo–the value of acupuncture management in the first trimester

Dr. Debra Betts is the highly-acclaimed author of “The Essential Guide to Acupuncture in Pregnancy & Childbirth.” She graduated from the London College of Acupuncture in 1989 and specializes in women’s health. In 1997, she started teaching acupuncture to midwives and has published several works on the use of acupuncture and acupressure in obstetric practice.

She completed her PhD on the use of acupuncture in threatened miscarriage in 2014 and is now the Director of Postgraduate Programs for an online Masters’s course in acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine. Debra also works as a clinical supervisor at a hospital antenatal acupuncture clinic and lectures internationally on the use of acupuncture in obstetric care.

Paul Magarelli, MD, PhD

Topic: PCOS Treatment Strategy: Western Perspectives

Dr. Paul Magarelli is a highly experienced, double-board certified Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility Specialist currently practicing at Kindbody in Denver, CO. He has been in private practice building families through Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) for more than 25 years. Dr. Magarelli achieved national acclaim for integrating acupuncture into fertility medicine. He is known for his low IVF fees, providing patients with high-quality fertility treatment at nearly half the cost of other centers.

Laura Erlich LAc, FABORM

Laura Erlich is the co-author of “Feed Your Fertility,” a multifaceted approach towards reproductive care. Well versed in the modalities of integrative, allopathic and functional medicine, the heart of Laura’s teaching is rooted in the beauty and complexity of classical and traditional Chinese medicine.

Laura holds a degree in Swedish, Shiatsu and Medical Deep Tissue massage from the Swedish Institute in New York City, and a Master’s degree in Traditional Oriental Medicine. Laura is a board certified fellow of the American Board of Oriental Reproductive Medicine (ABORM).

Her extensive post-graduate education has afforded the opportunity to study under many notable professionals in the field of Oriental Reproductive Medicine, including her late-mentor, Dr. Ray Rubio, Founding Director of the American Board of Oriental Reproductive Medicine, Sharon Weizenbaum, Randine Lewis and Jill Blakeway, to name a few.

Daoshing Ni, PhD, LAc

Topic: “COVID-19 and Women’s Health.”

Dr. Daoshing Ni is a published author, educator, and a TCM practitioner well-known and respected for his special interest in reproductive medicine and gynecology. In 1989 he co-founded Yo San University of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Dr. Dao started his studies in Chinese medicine with his father, Hua-Ching Ni, at an early age.

After earning his OMD. and PhD in Oriental Medicine, he pursued advanced studies in internal medicine, gynecology, and pediatrics at both Beijing and Nanjing Colleges of Traditional Chinese Medicine in China. Dr. Dao is a member of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine, Pacific Coast Fertility Society, and American Association of Acupuncture & Oriental Medicine. An active faculty in in all degree programs at Yo San University, Dr. Dao is the author of “Tao of Fertility” and co-author of “Sitting Moon: A Guide to Rejuvenation after Pregnancy“.

Sadhna Singh, DAOM, L.Ac.

Topic: “The ticking clock: Advanced maternal age management with acupuncture and herbal medicine.”

Dr. Sadhna Singh graduated from medical college in India, 1983. She has practiced medicine for over 10 years in the fields of obstetrics, gynecology and internal medicine. She completed her Masters in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine in Houston.

Dr. Singh holds a Doctorate in Acupuncture & Oriental Medicine with an emphasis in Women’s health from American College of Traditional Chinese medicine (ACTCM), San Francisco and is considered a specialist in the area of women’s health related matters, including fertility enhancement.

Dr. Singh is a a founding member, has served on the governing board and is a Fellow of the American Board of Reproductive Medicine (ABORM). She is a professional member of Resolve-The National Infertility Association & The American Society of Reproductive Medicine.

Dr. Singh is also past President Emeritus of the Complementary and Alternative Medicine Special Interest Group – CAM SIG for the American Society of Reproductive Medicine (ASRM). She was instrumental and played a key role in getting this bridge established connecting western medicine with Traditional Chinese Medicine.

Colleen Smith, DAOM, L.Ac.

Topic: “The ticking clock: Advanced maternal age management with acupuncture and herbal medicine.”

Dr Coleen Smith established Point of Origin Acupuncture in Spokane Washington in 2004, specializing in fertility acupuncture. She receives referrals from reproductive endocrinologists, obstetrician gynecologists, lactation consultants and pelvic floor specialists to support women through various stages of pre and post-natal care.

Dr. Smith became an RN in 1986 and worked for 18 years in labor and delivery, emergency, ICU and nursing management. After an extensive successful career in nursing, she attended American College of Acupuncture in Houston to complete a Masters in TCM in 2004. She received her Doctorate from American College of Traditional Chinese Medicine (ACTCM) in San Francisco, specializing in pain and women’s health.

Coleen was responsible for initiating and developing the Complementary Integrative Medicine Special Interest Group (CIM SIG) This organization is focused on acupuncture and complementary medicine as part of the American Society of Reproductive Medicine (ASRM).

She is now a part of the executive branch of The Acupuncture and TCM Board of Reproductive Medicine, ABORM. She has been a fellow of the ABORM since its inception in 2008 and has been serving on the Board for 9 years.

Shaoting Jing, PhD, LAc

Topic: Dysmenorrhea treatment with acupuncture and herbal medicine

Dr. Shaoting Jing received her Bachelor’s degree in Chinese Medicine from Gansu University of Traditional Chinese Medicine in 1984. She then began her fellowship training under Dr. Zhang Ren Yi, a renowned 7th generation OB/Gyn Doctor of Chinese Medicine, where she gained valuable clinical experience in treating patients with infertility and various gynecological disorders.

In 1991, Dr. Jing received her Master’s degree in Chinese Medicine and her MD in Western Medicine from Beijing University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, specializing in autoimmune disorders and endocrinology.

After moving to Los Angeles in 1992, Dr. Jing started her private acupuncture practice focusing on Women’s health, infertility, longevity care, and immunology. In 2006, Dr. Jing received her PhD in Traditional Chinese Medicine at American Liberty University with a specialization in Women’s Health. Dr. Jing also serves as an adjunct faculty and visiting clinical faculty member at Yo San University.

Catherine Austin, LAc

Topic: Improving male fertility with TCM treatments

Catherine Austin earned her Master’s Degree from the American College of Traditional Chinese Medicine in 1998. She has been a Licensed Acupuncturist in private practice for 15 years, specializing in digestive disorders, allergies, autoimmune diseases, and women’s health.

Ms. Austin has done extensive studies in Chinese herbs and founded the first organic Chinese herbal pharmacy in Sonoma County in Northern California. She lectures on respiratory, gastro-intestinal, and endocrine disorders, and supervises in the on-site clinic. She served as Chair of the Clinical Department of Pacific College from 2007 to 2009.

In 2011 and 2012, Catherine was involved with the design and implementation of the Acupuncture services portion of the new Integrative Medicine track in Family Medicine at UCSD. In 2012 and 2013, she began additional training in Ayurvedic medicine and herbs while working with top neurologist Dr. Chaudhary at Wellspring Health in La Jolla. Catherine completed her Doctoral Coursework in 2011, and is now teaching at several colleges in the US at both the Masters and Doctoral Level. She is also currently completing a book on Auto-Immune Disorders for publication in summer 2024.

Brian Grosam, PhD, LAc

Topic: Bursts of Qi: Shedding New Light on Hot Flashes

Dr. Brian Grosam earned his PhD in Acupuncture in 2009 from the Shandong University of Traditional Chinese Medicine where he fulfilled clinical studies in gynecology and neurology. Upon completion of his PhD, he became a professor at the American Academy of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine where he taught acupuncture from 2008-2015.

Dr. Brian Grosam is the author of “Understanding and Treating Hot Flashes in Menopause with Chinese Medicine” the first book in history to be written on the subject. His book combines Chinese medicine concepts with current Western medicine frameworks of science for a contemporary treatment approach to hot flashes. Dr. Brian Grosam has written several articles, lectured at medical symposiums, and has taught
online continuing education courses on a range of subjects including hot flashes and menopausal transition.

Dr. Brian Grosam is a member of the American Board of Oriental Reproductive Medicine, a Diplomate of Chinese Medicine from the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine, and a member of the North American Menopause Society.

Yueying Li, MMed, LAc

Topic: TCM Care for Mastitis. This lecture will cover mastitis from the TCM perspective, the internal and external use of classical formulas to treat mastitis and also how mastitis causes lactation problems.

Dr. Yueying Li specializes in Acupuncture, Chinese Medicine, Dermatology, Acupuncture Facial Rejuvenation, Women’s Health, Pain Management, and Depression. She established her private clinic practice in 1998, and continues her practice under the name of Art of Chinese Healing in West Los Angeles, where she sees her private patients and is training post-graduate Chinese medicine students to sharpen their clinical skills. Using her many years of clinical experience, Dr. Li has built her dermatology herb products line for both skin conditions and beauty.

Dr. Li graduated from South-West University of Medicine in China, and completed an additional 2 years of training at the Sichuan Institution of Dermatology where she conducted specialized clinical research in the field of dermatology.

Dr.Li has been a professor at Yosan University of Traditional Chinese Medicine in Los Angeles since 1995, and teaches both the Master and Doctoral programs. Since then she has successfully launched her own private clinical practice, and has built a strong knowledgeable team of professionals to bring patients optimal care.

Jake Fratkin, OMD, L.Ac.

Topic: The foundations of herbal formulas for fertility

Dr. Jake Fratkin is author of the highly acclaimed “Chinese Herbal Patent Medicines: The Clinical Desk Reference,” a comprehensive English language review of herbal medicines manufactured in China.

Dr. Fratkin has trained in Korean and Japanese acupuncture since 1975, and Chinese herbal medicine since 1982. He spent a year in Beijing hospitals specializing in internal disorders and pediatrics.

He has been a practitioner of Oriental Medicine since 1978, utilizing Chinese herbal medicine, Japanese meridian balancing and nutritional medicine. He specializes in internal disorders, infections and pediatrics.

He is also author of “Practical Therapeutics of Traditional Chinese Medicine”, Wu and Fischer, edited-organized by Jake Paul Fratkin (1997); “Case Histories in Autoimmune Disease” with Dr. Zeng Shengping (2014); and  Essential Chinese Formulas (2014)

Dr. Fratkin is the originator and program director for the Chinese herbal medicine programs at Bastyr University, Seattle (1984-1986), and Southwest Acupuncture College, Santa Fe (1986-1990).

Denise Wiesner, L.Ac.

Topic: Peripartum care

Denise Weisner has been in practice since 1994 with an emphasis on women’s issues and pain control. She treats women’s conditions in various stages of life – from menstrual disorders, infertility, pregnancy to menopause. She has experience treating women going through the process of using Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ART) including assisting embryo transfers at many fertility clinics.

She is board certified by American Board of Oriental Reproductive Medicine (ABORM). She has interned with Randine Lewis Ph.D, and is a charter member of the Fertile Soul™ Clinic Excellence in Fertility program. She is also certified in the Hunyuan fertility Method. She is the author of “Conceiving With Love, a whole body approach to creating intimacy, reigniting passion and increasing fertility”.

She has taught professional seminars to MD Obstetrician-Gynecologists, and Nurse Midwives on the application of Chinese Medicine in obstetrics, gynecology. She is also faculty lecturer for the Doctorate Fertility Program at Yosan University.

Amber Cooper, MD

Topic: Interpretation of Laboratory Testing in Reproductive Medicine

Dr. Amber Cooperis Chief Medical Officer-Genomics and Laboratory Sciences, and Medical and IVF Practice Director at Kindbody Fertility Clinic in St. Louis.

Prior to joining Kindbody, Dr. Cooper was a founding physician and the Chief Medical Officer for the St. Louis region of Vios Fertility Institute. She understands the challenges of infertility both personally and professionally. Board certified in both Obstetrics and Gynecology and Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility, she completed both her residency and fellowship at Washington University in St. Louis.

During her years of practice, Dr. Cooper has received numerous awards and has authored articles for several medical journals and textbooks. Additionally, she has led clinical studies, had her research covered in the local and national press, and spoken both nationally and internationally on various topics related to fertility. While she is passionate for all facets of fertility health, she has a special interest in improving IVF success and outcomes, fertility preservation, ovarian dysfunction, ovarian reserve and aging, hysteroscopic surgery, genetics, and the environmental impact on ovarian aging and function.

Jenna Miller

Topic: PGT-A: Genetic Testing of Embryos during IVF

Jenna Miller is a board-certified and licensed genetic counselor. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Genetics and Biotechnology from Brigham Young University and a Master of Science degree in Human Genetics from Sarah Lawrence College.

Jenna began her career at the biotech startup Recombine by providing genetic counseling services to patients and physicians. She then moved into clinical diagnostics for expanded carrier screening, and eventually lead CooperGenomics’ clinical diagnostics team. Jenna has been CooperSurgical’s clinical science liaison since 2017. In this role, she travels North America educating healthcare providers about genomics within the ART field. Jenna is passionate about genomics education, informed consent, and ethical approaches to genomic testing. She hopes to share her enthusiasm for clinical genomics with everyone she encounters.

Phillip Ward, L.Ac.

Topic: Improving testosterone with TCM

Phillip Ward is a California and North Carolina, Licensed Acupuncturist and a Nationally Certified Herbalist. He committed to walking the path of a healer in 1995, when he began studying the art of harmonious living with a tai chi and qi gong master. The same year he graduated from the Body Therapy Institute and opened a bodywork and energy healing practice in Greensboro, North Carolina.

In 1998, he co-founded the Golden Flower Tai Chi School of Greensboro, and began teaching bodywork, energy healing, and Polarity Therapy at a school for massage therapy. He continued to grow his knowledge in health and healing by attending Yo San University’s School of Traditional Chinese Medicine while also studying External Qi Healing with a 25th generation Long Men Taoist Priest.

Deirdre Courtney, M.T.C.M.

Topic: The Importance of Postpartum Care of Health

Deirdre Courtney attended the prestigious Yo San University in Los Angeles, earning a Masters Degree in Traditional Chinese Medicine. She practiced in Colorado Springs and Denver from 1991 until she returned to Ireland and opened her practice in 1993.

Her book ‘Nourishing Life The Yang Sheng Way’ Nutrition and Lifestyle advice from Chinese Medicine was published by Singing Dragon in 2019 Deirdre is also published in TCM journals, magazines and newspapers, and she has made many appearances on TV and radio.

Deirdre was the Head of the Acupuncture Department and principal Acupuncture lecturer at the College of Naturopathic Medicine CNM Ireland for 12 years, and was the Chairperson of the Irish Register of Chinese Medical Herbalism from 2011-2015. She runs a busy practice from her clinic in Blackrock in south Dublin.

Jenn Shulman, DAOM, LAc

Topic: Integrative Fertility: Where the industry is going and how TCM should evolve with it

Dr. Jenn Shulman has fifteen years of experience practicing acupuncture in New York and Los Angeles and has administered over 20,000 treatments. She divides her time between her private practice in Miracle Mile where she treats general women’s health, fertility, and pain management, and at Southern California Reproductive Center in Beverly Hills where she exclusively treats fertility patients. Dr.Jenn is a doctoral supervisor and mentor at Yo San University.

She believes that we are all unique and no treatment plan is cookie-cutter. She enjoys writing custom formulations for patients or showing them how to make their own herbal infusions. She prides herself on being an integrated practitioner. She is in her element working with REI’s as well as classic TCM practitioners. If a patient is going through IVF she is here to explain medications, procedures, and other language that is commonly used by their IVF clinic.

Mao Shing Ni, PhD, L.Ac.

Topic: Nutrition during pregnancy

Dr. Mao Shing Ni, popularly known as Dr. Mao, is the 38th generation of Chinese medicine doctors in his family. Well known and respected in the field of integrative and anti-aging medicine, he is the cofounder of Tao of Wellness and Yo San University, both award winning centers for health and Traditional Chinese Medicine graduate education, respectively.

Dr. Mao holds two doctorates as well as being board certified in anti-aging medicine. Dr. Mao has written 18 books, including his bestselling books Secrets of Longevity, Second Spring, and his latest, Live Your Ultimate Life. The Yo San University Doctoral Program:

Integrative Reproductive Medicine

Our two year clinical doctorate specialty integrates advanced Western and Eastern diagnostics and treatment protocols for the effective management of women’s reproductive health. Program features include case-based learning, advanced herbal formula writing, practical demonstrations of acupuncture, physical exams for specific conditions, and collaboration with other healthcare professionals utilizing evidence-based practice and research methods.

The program is 1220 hours in length, composed of 570 didactic hours and 650 clinical hours. Courses are offered in a monthly modular format over a two-year period.
